Professional Bio
Dr Darryl Sellwood completed his award-winning PhD thesis in 2019 at Flinders University, focused on romantic and sexual relationships for people with complex communication needs. Cerebral palsy affects his speech, so he uses a variety of Augmentative and Alternative Communication strategies. As a computer science graduate with experience in the telecommunications field, he has a broad perspective on both user and technical issues. He continues to pursue a research career in the disability field, where his interests in people and technology converge.
In 2023, Darryl led a post-doctoral research project exploring the experiences of Australian adults with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also completed a three-year contract as a Scholarly Fellow at Flinders University, reviewing curriculum in Disability Studies.
Darryl has a long history of advocacy and improving services for people with disabilities. He has served on various community agency boards. Since May 2023 he has been chairperson of the national committee of AGOSCI Inc.
An incisive and provocative thinker and an engaging speaker, Darryl has been an invited or keynote speaker at numerous conferences and festivals throughout Australia and across the world.
